  • How do septic systems work?

    A septic tank system uses natural processes to treat and dispose of the wastewater generated in your home or business. The system typically consists of a septic tank and a drain field, or soil absorption field. Your septic tank provides the first step in treatment. As wastewater flows into the tank, the heavier solids settle to the bottom to form a sludge layer, and the lighter solids, greases, and oils float to the top to form a scum layer. The liquid wastewater from the tank flows into gravel-filled trenches in a typical drain field where it is distributed via perforated pipes and then treated by the natural soil system.

  • How often do I need to have my tank pumped?

    We recommend having your tank pumped every 3-5 years.

  • How can I keep my septic system working properly?

    There are several things you can do to maintain your system and increase its lifespan and effectiveness. Read our tips below on how to preserve your septic tank.

Septic Dos & Don’ts

Do:

  • Conserve water
  • Repair any leaks
  • Divert downspouts and surface water away from your drain field
  • Have your tank inspected/pumped every 3-5 years.
  • Space out loads of laundry

Don’t:

  • Don’t drive over your tank or drain field.
  • Don’t dig around the tank or drainfield or build anything over it.
  • Don’t plant anything but grass around the drainfield.
  • Don’t overuse your garbage disposal.
  • Don’t pour harmful chemicals down the drain.
  • Don’t flush trash or chemicals down the toilet
  • Don’t waste money on septic tank additives because the bacteria needed to treat wastewater is naturally present in sewage.
  • Don’t allow backwash from water softener systems to enter the drainfield.
  • Never enter a septic tank (toxic gases can kill).
  • No wet wipes.
